Next-Generation Wireless and 5G Networks: The Winding Road to the Next Generation of Wireless

Landmark A - 3rd Floor - Renaissance Hotel

Last  February, at the Mobile World Congress 2015 held in Barcelona, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler compared 5G to a Picasso painting. “I see something different than you see,” he said. “I think that’s where 5G is right now. It’s all in the eye of the beholder.”

There’s a lot of excitement about the next generation, but wait -- we’re not sure how the next generation will be defined. The U.S. is in a race. The U.S. has dominated 4G/LTE but there is stiff competition from Japan and South Korea on how the next generation of wireless will be defined.

What’s the pathway for suppliers and carriers to the next generation? This question is what is guiding TIA’s future plans for next-generation and 5G networks at TIA 2016.

What will you learn?

  • Licensed vs. unlicensed spectrum
  • LTE-U and Wi-Fi interoperability
  • How do Japan, South Korea, and Europe look at 5G and how do their views compare to that of the U.S.? How will 5G be defined?
  • Is high band spectrum appropriate for 5G? How does it compare with low band spectrum?
  • Will 5G spectrum be harmonized across all world regions?
  • Comparisons of 5G and Wi-Fi
  • Small Cells, DAS and 5G deployment
  • Alternative networks for IoT, e.g., Long-range Low Power Radio-Access Networks and SIGFOX
  • Will millimeter wave mobile communications be used for 5G?
  • More about the benefits of 5G: faster, ultra low latency, even more connected world – the IoT of the future
  • Virtual reality and 5G
  • Increasing capacity with small cells – 1000x vs. 4G

The 4G networks of today are successfully meeting the dramatic growth of data driven by smartphone adoption and utilization. The 5G networks of tomorrow will need to meet accelerated growth and the emerging demands of a fully connected society. This session will explore how the 5G networks of the future will differ from the architectures and technologies of today. This will include the roles of cellular, WiFi, LTE-U, LoRa, NFV/SDN and even faster wireless and mobile networks to meet the challenge of future needs of consumers and enterprise customers. How will these networks interconnect? What key technologies will facilitate the evolution? Are there key milestones to be achieved over the next 3, 5 or 10 years? What will be the key enablers or inhibitors to successfully meeting the growing and changing needs of the future?
